Ai Weiwei Designed Some
Skateboard Decks

Famous Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has been pretty busy lately. In addition to releasing a widely talked about heavy metal album and two music videos to accompany it, he designed a few skateboards as well.

These three decks are available with either a documentation image from Weiwei’s well-known Sunflower Seeds installation or one of two stills from the popular documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. Each one comes emblazoned with quotes like, “The world is not changing if you don’t shoulder the burden of responsibility.” Pretty much what we’ve all come to expect from an artist who’s a much more accomplished activist than an artist.

The decks are available at the The Sk8room gallery shop in Brussels for just a little over $400, if you’re into that sort of thing… Merchandise is merchandise, but at least Matthew Barney’s graphite skate deck made a little bit of sense, both contextually and formally.
