French filmmaker Leos Carax is “controversial” and “mad,” but his films Mauvaus Sang, Pola X and, most recently, Holy Motors are daring, strange, unsettling and beautiful visions of a true auteur. He’s also struggled to make a film, every time.
The new documentary Mr leos caraX goes behind the struggle, the vision and the “romantic, but destructive characters,” with some poetic inflections by director Tessa Louise-Salomé. Interviews include critics, his actors and crew as well as Harmony Korine, Kylie Minogue, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and others. It will show us the real Leos Carax underneath… well, a lot of it through Carax’s “main actor,” “virtual double” and “perfect alter ego” Denis Levant. It’s a truth vs. reality kind of thing, maybe.
Mr leos caraX screens at Sundance Film Festival later this month. Maybe we’ll finally found out who that “Katya” girl he thanked in the titles of Holy Motors is. There’s no trailer or teaser yet, but here are some stills:
