Say Goodbye to Sounds, the Last St. Mark’s Record Store

February 14, 2014 | Andy Cush

The space that houses Sounds, the last remaining record store on St. Mark’s Place, is going on the market today. It’s sad that the shop will soon be gone, and that a strip that was once an embarrassment of music riches no longer has a single store to its name, but let’s be honest: Sounds, in recent years, was not a very good record store. My last trip there was about a year and a half ago, and there was barely anything on the racks (I nabbed a copy of Everybody Loves the Sunshine and called it a day).

There are still plenty of good options just off St. Mark’s: Kim’s on First Avenue, Rainbow Music around the corner from that, and that guy who parks his van on Astor Place are all minutes away. Or you can just hoof it to Other.
