Steven Soderbergh “retired” from feature filmmaking last year but has continued directing television, making t-shirts and painting. He also runs a nice little blog, periodically updated with smart posts about filmmaking, his voracious reading habits and creative edits of movies. His latest classic movie edit is Raiders of The Lost Ark, in its entirety, made black and white. The original audio track is replaced with other bits of score, […]
It’s been a while since we’ve had a reason to talk about “Bound 2” — that Nick Knight-directed video opus, complete with Kanye West dry-humping a dead-faced Kardashian on a KTM bike as it speeds by a very fake desert sunset backdrop. But Seth Rogen is still talking about it, like in this Jimmy Fallon “Tales From Set” online segment. Last year, Seth Rogen and […]
RIP pay phones! On October 15, the contract with franchisees that maintain all of NYC’s 9,670 pay phones will expire. While there’s still no official decision about what will happen next month, it’s probably safe to say the odds of franchisees renewing their contracts are much smaller than even a few years ago. In 2013, DoITT […]
Jeff Koons’ “Celebration” series, which includes those exceptionally giant, perfectly shiny balloon animals, is a bit child-centric. Specifically, it seems to be about “the absence of a child” — an opulent, emotionally overwhelming ode to Koons’ little son, Ludwig Maximillian, who was kidnapped to Europe by the artist’s ex. Now, in a small classroom at the All Saints Episcopal Church in […]
A cyclist struck a 59-year-old woman in Central Park on Thursday, September 18th. Jill Tarlov was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center where she later died from her injuries. Police say that the cyclist, Jason Marshall, had swerved to avoid other pedestrians, hitting Tarlov. He sustained minor shoulder and hand injuries. “He was yelling for her to get out […]
A local TV news reporter in Alaska was doing what seemed to be a standard profile on the Alaskan Cannabis Club last night when she abruptly revealed that she is, in fact, the owner of the club and this will be her last report for the network. “Fuck it, I quit!” was her succinct way of […]
ANIMAL’s feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their original “idea sketch” next to a finished artwork or project. This week, Chicago-based artist Sam Rolfes talks about his typeface/word world building series, which recalls monolithic islands, bathroom lighter tags and 3D scans of his childhood home. Rather than manipulating the kind of polychrome, malformed figure I normally obsess […]
ANIMAL will be bringing you continuing coverage from The New York Film Festival, which runs at Sep 26 – Oct 12 at Film Society of Lincoln Center. Goodbye To Language plays Saturday, September 27th at 9:00pm and Wednesday, October 1st at 9pm. (Tickets are sold out, but there’ll be a stand-by line.) “Thought regains it’s place in poop,” a […]
Street artist Gilf wants you to know that there are an estimated 60 million people without shoes in the world. To raise awareness, she walked over 15 miles through New York City, completely barefoot, as you can see in the video above. If you would like to contribute, visit Soles For Souls for a variety of ways to […]
Yesterday’s march was the single largest environmental rally in history, with Metro reporting estimated attendance of 310,000 and people traveling from all around the world to participate. The United Nations Climate Summit will take place on September 23rd. During the march, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared “Climate Week.” He was joined at the rally by several politicians and celebrities, including U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon, […]
