“If anyone lays his hand on me, I’ll cut it off,” starts the trailer for Cairo 678, a film that seems very timely and yet, very late. Follow the lives of three Cairene women who experience and finally confront sexual harassment — and frankly, assault — in their daily lives and how these real-life-based incidents led to Egypt’s first anti-harassment legislation. Directed by Mohamed Diab, the film balances a universal concerns that become mired in the dynamics of traditional gender oppression and social change.
