The Season of Paul McCarthy Has Finally Arrived

May 10, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Today is the opening of not one, but two of three Paul McCarthy exhibitions that will run throughout New York City this Spring. The three related exhibitions will be scattered throughout the city and accompanied by an outdoor sculpture presentation. Well, we’re not complaining. Why can’t it always be “Paul McCarthy Season?”

Today, at both of Hauser & Wirth’s Chelsea and Midtown locations will be the opening reception of the exhibitions titled Paul McCarthy: Sculptures” as well as Paul McCarthy: Life Cast.” The gallery’s Chelsea location will feature a series of wooden sculptures each carved out of black walnut, and based on the artist’s own interpretation of popular fairytale characters, more specifically Snow White. While this isn’t the first time McCarthy has used characters from Snow White in his art, and will certainly not be the last.

The second exhibition at the gallery’s Midtown location will include a collection of life cast sculptures rendering both the artist as well as numerous sculptures of actress Elyse Poppers in painstaking hyper-realistic detail using many special effect techniques in conjunction with the life-casting process. In the artists own words regarding the casted sculptures:

‘makes no bones about the fact this is someone dead, without the mask of a clown or the possibility of sleep and dreaming’

In case that isn’t enough of Paul McCarthy for you, the artist’s third exhibition titled “Rebel Dabble Babble” will be a collaboration between the artist and his son Damon, opening on June 20th at the gallery’s Chelsea location.

Oh, and if you’re just way too busy attending Frieze New York simply look outside and check out this giant balloon dog. It’s not a Koons, dammit!

Opening receptions: May 10 10AM-6PM Paul McCarthy: Life Cast, 32 E 69th St , Midtown, NY, Paul McCarthy: Sculptures, 511 W 18th St, Chelsea, NY
