James Murphy Remixes David Bowie to Tribute Steve Reich, Everyone Is Happy

October 10, 2013 | Andy Cush

Former LCD Soundsystem main man James Murphy created this 10-minute remix of David Bowie’s “Love Is Lost” for a forthcoming deluxe edition of The Next Day, and oh fuck is it good. The track takes Steve Reich’s “Clapping Music,” an iconic piece of minimalist music, as a point of departure, using that work’s gradually shifting accents as a rhythmic basis. Then, around halfway through, the frantic polyrhythms drop out, replaced by straight disco. It is a wonderful synthesis of these three musicians’ styles: Reich’s cerebral concert music on one side, Murphy’s body-moving hedonism on the other, and Bowie gleefully dancing everywhere in between. Listen here.
