NYU undergrad Chris Cole’s final project for one of his classes was a short film about a college student obsessed with the rapper Drake. The film shares its title with Drake’s most recent release, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, but where Drake’s use of the title is inscrutable, Cole’s is clear: If you’re reading this it’s too late for Drake…because he’s dead.
The unnamed protagonist breathlessly rhapsodizes about Drake in a voiceover reminiscent of Patrick Bateman’s musical commentary about Huey Lewis & the News in American Psycho. His speech is peppered with references to Drake lyrics (“when I listen to Drake he makes my days go from 0 to 100 real quick”), and at one point he calls Drake the rap Lena Dunham, which is a weirdly accurate comparison. He loves Drake so much that he would rather Drake dies than declines, so he plots to go Mark David Chapman on him.
It’s better than it sounds, so check it out.
