See Spike Lee’s Film School Thesis at BAM

May 29, 2014 | Andy Cush

BAM is hosting a Spike Lee retrospective this month that will feature the filmmaker and gentrification-hater‘s NYU master’s thesis alongside his better-known work.

It’s called Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, and it was assistant directed by the auteur’s classmate Ang Lee. Here’s the plot synopsis, via BAM:

Lee’s Student Academy Award-winning NYU thesis film displays the brash stylistic confidence, flashes of humor, and nuanced observations on race and inner-city life that he’d soon unleash in full force in works like Do the Right Thing. After Joe gets killed by the gangsters who had been using his barbershop as a front, Zack takes over running the business—but does he have the fortitude to resist getting mixed up with the same thugs?

The retrospective begins June 29, with Joe’s screening July 1.
